As you move down the path to becoming a United States citizen, there are goals you must achieve and tests you must pass. One goal is the US citizenship test, which proves to your USCIS officer that you’re ready for naturalization.
What Is the US Citizenship Test?
The US citizenship test is an important part of your citizenship process and is typically conducted on the day of your citizenship interview. The test has two parts: an English test and a civics test.
The English Test
The English part of the test assesses your ability to read, write and speak in the English language. You’ll be expected to read and write in a way that suggests you understand the meaning of sentences. Plus, your USCIS officer will listen closely to your speech as you give answers.
The Civics Test
During the civics part of the test, your officer will ask you 10 random questions out of 100 available regarding US history and government. To pass, you must answer six of them correctly.
3 Tips to Help You Prepare for Your US Citizenship Test
Although it may seem nerve-racking, with a little prep work and a few tips, you can take your citizenship test with confidence.
1. Use Available Study Guides
The US Citizenship and Immigration Services offers free online study guides for both the English and civics tests. A quick online search can also help you discover additional study tools such as sample quizzes you can take to measure your knowledge.
2. Watch Videos Online
Online platforms such as YouTube have videos you can watch to help you visualize and hear the English language. This is especially helpful if you’re an auditory or visual learner.
3. Practice, Practice, Practice
Practice makes perfect and helps you hold onto information. Practice reading, writing and speaking in the English language. You can also have your family members or friends quiz you using flashcards.
