Interview Preparation Tips

Nothing can compare to the all-or-nothing, intimidating atmosphere of an immigration interview. Unless you have been through one, it is hard to know what to expect or how to prepare.

At the law office of Mark E. Jacobs, P.C., we have helped countless clients walk into their interviews with increased confidence, ready to stand up for their futures. For interview preparation tips from a Dallas-Fort Worth family immigration lawyer with more than 25 years of experience, contact our law firm.

Preparing You for Your Immigration Interview

Our years of practice give us the knowledge and experience necessary to advise immigrants facing a wide range of immigrant interviews, including:

  • Family-based immigration interviews
  • Citizenship/naturalization interviews
  • Asylum interviews
  • Interviews at U.S. consulates
  • And others

We thoroughly prepare our clients for each of these interviews. We will review the immigration packet submitted on your behalf and ensure that the information is still accurate. If necessary, you can make corrections at the interview. We will then go over what to expect at your interview, preparing you for the type of questions the immigration officers will ask. For example, immigration officers will question couples going through marriage interviews separately and then compare responses – we will help you prepare to answer these questions confidently.

Our goal is to give you the best shot possible, even if we cannot stand by your side during the interview.

Some General Tips

Following are basic tips that must be followed for a successful interview. While they may seem obvious, they are essential.

  • Dress appropriately. Formal attire tells an immigration officer that you are serious about your application.
  • Be respectful of the officers and the process. If you give respect, you will get respect.
  • Approach this interview like you would a job interview. Sit straight in your chair, don’t chew gum, etc.
  • Prepare. Prepare. Prepare. This could be the most important interview of your life and preparation is essential.

Most importantly, understand that you are asking for a benefit from the government, not a right. Approach the interview as a request and show respect at all times.

I have been getting all my legal service with the office of Mark E Jacobs for over 7 years now. They are on top of everything and have made a difficult journey a lot easier, taking some of the weight of my shoulders. They have gotten us the results we wanted in a timely process, even when immigration overall is taking months and months. I appreciate all the hard work they did for my family and me.
