The US Citizenship Test: What to Expect & Preparation Tips

As you move down the path to becoming a United States citizen, there are goals you must achieve and tests you must pass. One goal is the US citizenship test, which proves to your USCIS officer that you’re ready for naturalization.

What Is the US Citizenship Test?

The US citizenship test is an important part of your citizenship process and is typically conducted on the day of your citizenship interview. The test has two parts: an English test and a civics test.

The English Test

The English part of the test assesses your ability to read, write and speak in the English language. You’ll be expected to read and write in a way that suggests you understand the meaning of sentences. Plus, your USCIS officer will listen closely to your speech as you give answers.

The Civics Test

During the civics part of the test, your officer will ask you 10 random questions out of 100 available regarding US history and government. To pass, you must answer six of them correctly.
